On July 4, 2009, there was a Tea Party in Bozeman, Montana. 2,000 peaceful people marched seven blocks up Main Street from the Public Library to a rally in front of the Courthouse. A number of those who spoke there emphasized the nonpartisan nature of the gathering. True, among the signs being carried by the marchers were some which mentioned the President in less than favorable terms. But these were outnumbered by traditional American messages of Freedom and Liberty.
This is important. Presidents come and go. But the machinery of government stays. And for a hundred years, it has gotten bigger, more powerful, and more intrusive with each successive administration.
Both political parties have contributed to this growth. Though they squabble over the details, Democrats and Republicans in Congress have been exceptionally nonpartisan about increasing the size and scope of government. And at the national level, both parties not only support Big Government, they benefit from it.
The current President is not the real problem! Yes, he has to be criticized when he violates the Constitution. We have to resist the huge federal power grab inherent in his proposed health care legislation. But the real enemy of all Americans is the out of control beast of Big Government.
Beware of those who want to keep us fixated upon the President as the source of our national troubles. Question their motives! Attacking the figurehead of the Democratic Party Establishment only sets us up to be “saved” by the next figurehead of the Republican Party Establishment. BOTH Establishments are creatures of Big Government! This is the way we have been fooled for a long time.
Quoting Bill Clinton’s old mentor Carroll Quigley, who studied the growth of Big Government for 20 years and thought it a very good thing: “The argument that the two parties should represent opposed ideals and policies, one, perhaps, of the Right and the other of the Left, is a foolish idea acceptable only to the doctrinaire and academic thinkers. Instead, the two parties should be almost identical, so that the American people can "throw the rascals out" at any election without leading to any profound or extreme shifts in policy.”
This fight—and it IS a fight—is not between Democrats and Republicans. It is between the forces of Freedom and the forces of anti-Freedom manifest in Big Government.
